Based on the successful cartoon series, DuckTales 2 is the 1993 sequel to the popular DuckTales for the NES by Capcom. Like its predecessor, DuckTales 2 continues the adventures of millionaire fowl Scrooge McDuck as he travels around the world looking for booty (the kind that glitters). This time, the goal is to locate the hidden treasure of his dear departed dad Fergus McDuck by piecing together seven parts of a torn treasure map. DuckTales 2 was a promising game, but it was a commercial failure due to the advent of the Super NES which sunk the marketability of the old 8-bit cartridges. Nonetheless, its engaging gameplay still offered hours of enjoyment for the few players who picked it up. The game has the same controls as the original with slight changes. Scrooge McDuck completes the different levels by jumping over platforms, dispatching enemies, and solving puzzles. The primary mode of attack is his cane which is used as a pogo stick in order to bounce off the heads of enemies and get to hard-to-reach places. This time, the pogo stick jump is easier to perform and the movements are more polished. There are now additional uses for the cane such as hanging off wall hinges and dragging heavy objects around. An item shop is also available where Scrooge can buy power-ups that affect the life meter, game money, and number of continues. The levels are still colorful and cartoony, and main characters from the show still appear to give Scrooge hints or act as level bosses. The game's soundtrack is still upbeat and entertaining. The DuckTales cartoon theme song serves as the opening audio and each level has its own respective music. It doesn't really compare to the first game's tunes, but it holds up well on its own. DuckTales 2 is still nonlinear and lets you choose where you want to search for treasures first - Niagara Falls, Bermuda Triangle, Mu, Egypt, or Scotland - and offers bonus areas if you successfully find the seven map pieces. Like the original, the game has two different endings depending on the player's progress. Like Capcom's Mega Man sequels, DuckTales 2 took all the successful elements of its predecessor and refined them, becoming an awesome game. However, the lack of distributors for outdated NES 8-bits caused this title to flop. Since its release was limited, finding an original cartridge is very difficult. Thankfully, you can now play DuckTales 2 online or download DuckTales 2 roms just in case you missed out on this game during your childhood. Even after so many years, it never fails to delight.
