Gyruss is very similar to Galaga in it's basic concept. However, the game is presented in a forced 3D perspective akin to "Tempest". The player's ship faces into the center of the screen is able to move around the perimeter of an implicit circle. This style of shooting game is sometimes referred to as a "tube shooter", and Gyruss is one of the earliest examples of it.

The scrolling star field earlier space shooter games employed was modified to serve the 3D perspective, with the stars coming into view at the center of the screen and flying outward. Thus, giving the illusion that the ship was moving through space.

A port of the 1983 arcade game, Gyruss was also ported to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, ColecoVision, PlayStation (within "Konami Arcade Classics") and Game Boy Advance (within "Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advanced").
